About the role
Officers will perform duties related to the enforcement of security regulations and procedures to protect Southern Research Institute personnel, customers, visitors, information, property, and other assets. Must be proficient in the operation of security, safety, and emergency monitoring devices and systems. This is a full-time security position requiring availability to work various hours at short notice, including additional hours in emergencies or personnel shortages. When unavailable to work, prior notice must be provided as soon as possible. Must maintain a valid state-issued driver’s license.
Responsibilities
- Respond to alarms, emergencies, and work with outside responders for effective emergency response.
- Maintain a secured facility by monitoring access, checking identification, and overseeing deliveries, including city sidewalks and roads surrounding the Institute.
- Enforce compliance with the Institute Parking Policy and address illegally parked vehicles creating safety hazards.
- Create and maintain a sense of safety and security on the worksite, understanding emergency protocols.
- Conduct facility surveillance via vehicle, foot patrols, or stationary posts, including monitoring electronic surveillance systems and making rounds to designated checkpoints.
- Detect security breaches and contact appropriate authorities.
- Maintain detailed and accurate reports each shift, including locking/unlocking doors and turning off lights as required.
- Monitor and control employee and non-employee access to all areas, following procedures for visitors and after-hours sign-in.
- Implement the incident response command system during emergencies and cooperate with local authorities.
- Respond to internal and external alarms following required procedures and report security concerns or system failures.
- Provide outstanding customer service, displaying courtesy and tact in all interactions.
- Follow procedures outlined in the “Guard Book” or other guidance documents and notify the Security Manager of any security breaches or suspicions.
- Complete tasks directed by the Security Manager or Lead Security Officer, including administrative duties and team notifications.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to use MS Office products (email, Word, Excel).
- Valid Alabama Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record to drive a company vehicle on patrol.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new tasks and use judgment within defined practices and procedures.
- Willingness to work extra hours/overtime when necessary and adapt to a dynamic schedule.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- Must qualify with a firearm through the Alabama Security Regulatory Board and meet required certifications.
- U.S. citizenship is required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Alabama Security Regulatory Board Certification.
- Prior law enforcement, military, or armed security experience.

Certifications & Licenses
- Certification in the use of handcuffs, chemical deterrent sprays, and baton usage.
- Certification in first aid and CPR/AED.
- May require obtaining and maintaining a government security clearance.
- Yearly certification through the Alabama Security Regulatory Board.
