About the Role

This position performs routine patrols, writes incident reports, and responds to non-emergency and emergency calls throughout the entire campus. Provides security services to ensure a safe environment for staff and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts continuous random patrols, utilizing the patrol vehicle, bicycle, or foot patrol.
  • Responds to all calls received from the public, hospital staff, and the security dispatcher.
  • Monitors and pages all fire codes, as received on the fire monitor system located in security dispatch.
  • Responds to hospital emergency overhead pages as determined by security dispatch.
  • Performs physical management of patients going through crisis.
  • Escorts patients to In Patient Mental Health or other areas of the facility as requested by staff (e.g., doctor or nurse).
  • Monitors and reports alarms received on the S&D alarm panel, generator alarm panel, HVAC computer, and Medical Air Gases alarm panel.
  • Answers all calls for assistance received on the security emergency phone line or facilities help line.
  • Creates maintenance work orders for all calls received on the facilities help line.
  • Enters information from maintenance job logs and work orders into the TMS application.
  • Monitors CCTV system for suspicious circumstances and dispatches a security officer when required.
  • Assists with helicopter flight operations, securing and unlocking doors as prescribed by policies and procedures.
  • Notifies the Security Manager and/or Supervisor via chain of command for any major incidents occurring on facility property.
  • Enforces parking policy as directed.
  • Escorts employees to and from their vehicles as requested or assigned by the Security Supervisor or Manager.
  • Responds to all panic alarms located throughout the facility.
  • Armed security staff will respond to an active shooter or other lethal threat and neutralize the threat if possible.
  • Enforces compliance with Above Ceiling Access Permit requirements for contractors.
  • Writes reports as required by policies.
  • Follows all departmental and medical center policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • Assists with morgue operations, including handling of deceased patients.
  • Participates in further learning opportunities as required.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Military, corrections, or law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Must obtain the following certifications within 6 months of hire:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA
    • Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (TEAM ADVANCED)
  • Must possess the following certifications pre-hire and maintain annually:
    • Concealed Pistol License (CPL)
    • MI Commission on Law Enforcement Firearms (MCOLES FIREARMS)
  • Must pass a DMV record check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment psychological examination.
  • Must pass Security Defensive Tactics Training.
  • Must pass taser and pepper gel training.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to interact with people at all levels to communicate information clearly and understandably.
  • If driving a company vehicle, must be eligible under hospital insurance guidelines.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Regular and predictable attendance; ability to stay awake during shifts.
  • Overall dexterity, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling.
  • Ability to perform physical management, including restraining, maneuvering, and holding combative individuals.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Able to wear a bullet-resistant vest and personal protective equipment, including latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
  • Able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
  • May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
  • Physical Demand Level: Moderate. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs., and/or walk/stand/push/pull arm/leg controls.
