About the role
The successful candidate will serve as a uniformed Safety and Security Officer and dispatcher at Husson University, ensuring the comfort, safety, and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities include high-visibility patrols, CCTV and radio monitoring, enforcement of university rules and regulations, coordination with law enforcement, and emergency response.
Responsibilities
- Provide prompt, courteous services to students, staff, and visitors.
- Work a full-time schedule, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays as necessary; cover shifts due to absences or unforeseen circumstances.
- Attend and complete all departmental and university training requirements, including CPR/AED certification.
- Maintain knowledge of and comply with all departmental policies and procedures.
- Perform lead Security Officer duties in the absence of a supervisor.
- Maintain awareness of campus property, life safety systems, and emergency plans, including proper use of fire extinguishers.
- Uphold confidentiality of all departmental and university information.
- Wear the issued uniform and maintain all duty equipment.
- Monitor and operate a two-way radio using proper protocol to maintain FCC and NIMS compliance.
- Patrol university property to prevent and detect intrusion, theft, and life safety concerns.
- Provide safety and traffic control during campus events.
- Ensure all doors and buildings are properly secured and resolve safety concerns noted during shifts.
- Monitor and regulate building systems, including boilers and refrigeration units.
- Monitor CCTV and review footage for security and investigations.
- Answer telephone calls, take messages, and provide information.
- Enforce university rules and regulations, including issuing parking tickets.
- Escort students, staff, faculty, and visitors as needed.
- Investigate suspicious activity, security issues, and criminal incidents.
- Gather and process evidence, documenting incidents in verbal and written reports.
- Respond to accidents, medical emergencies, disturbances, and other emergencies; provide First Aid and CPR.
- Write technical reports to document incidents, investigations, and daily activities.
- Coordinate emergencies until a supervisor arrives on scene.
- Contact the Associate Vice President of Security or designee during emergencies.
- Liaise with local police and fire departments as needed.
- Escort and remove undesirable persons from campus.
- Apprehend suspects and use approved restraint techniques, including pepper spray, baton, and handcuffs.
- Maintain a daily dispatch log of calls, events, and activities.
- Create digital and hard-copy documents and forms as needed.
- Perform daily inventory of first responder keycards and maps.
- Maintain working knowledge of all safety and security systems and technology platforms.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent required.
- At least 6 months of security, military, or law enforcement experience preferred.
- Attention to detail and ability to respond promptly and professionally.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and follow up as needed.
- Clear command of the English language and ability to complete computer-generated reports.
- Ability to remain calm, display good judgment, and resolve problems effectively.
- Ability to follow directions and interact professionally with students, staff, and visitors.
- Ability to work cohesively as part of a team and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of departmental and university information.
- Ability to safely operate motorized vehicles, bicycles, and other department-owned equipment.
- Valid Maine driver’s license.
- Certification or ability to be certified in First Aid, CPR/AED, and other assigned equipment.
