About the Role

Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, this role ensures the security and protection of the grounds and off-site buildings for Corewell Health, including the safety of all employees, visitors, and patients. This position may require Armed Security Officers to obtain Public Act 330 certification, enabling arrest for misdemeanor offenses and fulfilling Michigan State Police PA 330 certification requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol campus on foot, in vehicle, or on bike as assigned.
  • Assist with unlocking doors, motor assists, and observe for suspicious activities or security violations.
  • Perform duties at assigned posts and assist patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Enforce hospital rules, regulations, and policies as appropriate.
  • Monitor phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic in the Security Operations Center.
  • Provide statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management regarding performance, improvement strategies, and compliance.
  • Complete daily reports or logs on all activities, irregularities, and investigations; log all calls and lost articles.
  • Investigate suspected crimes on hospital grounds and off-site locations, prepare reports, and cooperate with law enforcement.
  • Provide security escorts and assistance to employees, visitors, or patients as needed.
  • Respond to routine inquiries, direct visitors, and prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
  • Use proactive non-violent verbal de-escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Assist nursing staff with physical management/restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
  • Use defensive tactics and approved MCOLES force continuum to safeguard lives and well-being when dealing with non-patient aggressors.
  • Possess, carry, and utilize Conduit Electronic Weapons, tasers, and other weapons in accordance with the MCOLES force continuum and Corewell Health policy.
  • Provide CPR/first aid in medical emergencies until trained medical staff arrive, per EMTALA law.
  • Assist Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing PAPRs/Tyvek suits and maintaining order in the decontamination area.
  • Report and respond to incidents of fire and/or safety hazards.
  • Inspect firefighting apparatus and extinguishers; assist with fire, disaster, and other emergency drills.
  • Release patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
  • For locations with PA 330 certification:
    • Utilize Police Authority to arrest for felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health property under Michigan Law (PA 330).
    • Utilize citation/ticket writing and ordinance enforcement authority under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local city ordinances.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two to three years’ law-enforcement related work experience as a police officer, hospital security, corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police.
  • Ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or dangerous incidents.
  • Electronic Control Devices (ECD) use requires approval, a current Carry Pistol License (CPL), and successful completion of the specialized Taser Training Course.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (within 90 days of hire).
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification (within 90 days of hire).
  • First Aid certification from the American Heart Association (within 90 days of hire).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from a state-regulated Police Academy.
  • Other experiences related to crowd control and security may be considered.
