Security Officer

About the Role

Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, this position ensures the security and protection of Beaumont Health (BH) grounds and off-site buildings, including the safety of employees, visitors, and patients. Armed Security Officers may be required to obtain Public Act 330 certification, enabling them to arrest for misdemeanor offenses and fulfill Michigan State Police PA330 certification requirements.

Responsibilities

• Patrol campus on foot, in vehicle, or on bike as assigned.
• Provide assistance such as unlocking doors, motor assists, and observing for suspicious activities or security violations.
• Perform duties at assigned posts and assist patients, visitors, and employees.
• Enforce hospital rules, regulations, and policies.
• Monitor the Security Operations Center, including phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic.
• Provide statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management regarding performance, improvement strategies, and compliance.
• Complete daily reports or logs on all activities, irregularities, and investigations; log all calls and lost articles.
• Investigate suspected crimes on hospital grounds and off-site locations, prepare reports, and cooperate with law enforcement.
• Provide security escorts and assistance to employees, visitors, or patients as needed.
• Respond to routine inquiries, direct visitors, and prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
• Use proactive non-violent verbal de-escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors.
• Assist nursing staff with physical management or restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
• Use defensive tactics and the approved MCOLES force continuum to safeguard lives and well-being when dealing with non-patient aggressors.
• Possess, carry, and utilize Conduit Electronic Weapons, tasers, and other weapons in accordance with the MCOLES force continuum and Beaumont Health policy.
• Provide CPR and first aid during medical emergencies until trained medical staff or the Local Fire Department arrives, as per EMTALA law.
• Assist Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing PAPRs/Tyvek suits, and maintaining order in the decontamination area.
• Report and respond to incidents of fire and/or safety hazards; inspect firefighting apparatus and extinguishers; assist with fire, disaster, and other emergency drills.
• Release patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
• For locations where PA 330 is in place:
  • Utilize Police Authority to arrest for felonies and misdemeanors on Beaumont Health property under Michigan Law (PA 330).
  • Utilize citation/ticket writing and ordinance enforcement authority under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local city ordinances.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or graduation from a state-regulated Police Academy is highly desired.
• Minimum of two to three years’ law-enforcement related work experience as a police officer, hospital security, corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police. Other experience related to crowd control and security may be considered.
• Ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or dangerous incidents.
• Valid unrestricted Michigan Operator’s License and insurability under the Hospital liability insurance guidelines.
• For Electronic Control Devices (ECD) use: Requires approval and authorization by the Director, a current Carry Pistol License (CPL), and successful completion of the specialized Taser Training Course.
• Within 90 days of hire, successfully complete certification and maintain continued competency in:
  • Defensive Tactics (non-patient use of force, use of handcuffs, chemical agent spray, and pressure point control techniques).
  • Proactive Nonviolent Verbal De-escalation.
  • BLS (CPR, AED, and first aid).
  • Hazmat/Decontamination.
  • Patient Physical Management/Restraint.
• At sites where PA 330 is required, successfully complete certification and maintain continued competency in all Michigan PA 330 requirements.
