About the role
Performs a variety of duties to provide assistance and information to all patients, visitors and staff. Enforces WVU Medicine policies and procedures to provide a safe, secure environment, in support of the Security Program.
Responsibilities
- Maintains consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide an information and directional resource for all patients, visitors and staff distributing accurate information to all who request such.
- Responds to all patient, visitor and staff requests for information/assistance in a caring, courteous manner.
- Provides physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services and room access patients, visitors and staff accessing WVU Medicine facilities.
- Makes recommendations to management, staff, visitors and patients to improve security and prevent accidents and crime.
- Reports suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents and persons, according to system and department policy and procedures.
- Responds and provides assistance to patients, visitors and staff during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, and lost/found issues, according to system and department policy and procedures.
- Provides written documentation of activities, incidents, premises safety, accidents, theft, vandalism and other data requested by supervision in a factual, objective and legible manner.
- Responds to and provides assistance to patients, visitors and staff during emergency situations such as; assaults, domestic disputes, fire, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents, disasters, etc.
- Operates Hospital-owned vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
- Ensures safety and proper operating condition of vehicles by performing vehicle inspections, as outlined by departmental policy.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent AND Three (3) years of experience in the security field OR Associate’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND one (1) year experience in the security field.
- Or Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND 6 months experience in the security field.
- Must be 21 years of age or older. Valid Driver’s License.
- Obtain certification in BLS or HeartSaver First Aid within 60 days of hire date.
- State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level)
- Obtain Defensive Tactics Certification ACT 235 training OC Spray Certification Baton Certification Taser User Certification
- Obtain VA DCJS Registration within six (6) months of hire and maintain
- Successfully pass psychological evaluation.
- Completion of the training requirements for an armed security officer
- Completion of all departmental Lethal Weapon Training and course work
- Handcuffing Tactics training
- AVADE Training Levels I - III
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement Academy
- Experience One (1) year experience in a healthcare security environment.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to perform effectively under often stressful situations.
- Good decision making and organizational skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to train Security Officers 1 & 2.
Physical Requirements
- Sit, stand and walk for the entire shift and/or double shift.
- Lift, push or pull 80 pounds.
- Tolerate adverse environmental conditions for entire shift and/or double shift.
