Security Officer 1

Performs a variety of duties to provide assistance and information to all patients, visitors, and staff. Enforces WVU Medicine policies and procedures to provide a safe, secure environment in support of the Security Program.

Responsibilities

• Maintains consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide information and directional resources for patients, visitors, and staff.
• Responds to all patient, visitor, and staff requests for information or assistance in a caring, courte manner.
• Provides physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services, and room access for patients, visitors, and staff.
• Monitors and maintains traffic flow in parking areas and roadways by assisting disabled vehicles, issuing parking permits, and warning violations.
• Protects people and property by assisting in the prevention of accidents, theft, and vandalism in accordance with system and department policies.
• Performs routine building rounds, building door unlocks, exterior building, and parking lot patrols.
• Makes recommendations to management, staff, visitors, and patients to improve security and prevent accidents and crime.
• Reports suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents, and persons according to system and department policies.
• Responds and provides assistance during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, and lost/found issues.
• Provides written documentation of activities, incidents, premises safety, accidents, theft, vandalism, and other requested data.
• Responds to and assists during emergency situations such as assaults, domestic disputes, fire, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents, and disasters.
• Performs patient restraint as directed by clinical staff and is capable of physical intervention when appropriate.
• Operates Hospital-owned vehicles in a safe and responsible manner and ensures their proper operating condition.
• Additional duties may include incident reporting, routine building rounds, incident investigation, crowd control, disaster response, parking enforcement, helicopter assignments, victim assistance, traffic direction, policy enforcement, alarm investigation, physical intervention, vehicle assists, transport of equipment/staff/visitors/patients, and STOPS training.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Obtain certification in BLS or HeartSaver First Aid within 60 days of hire date.
• State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas.
• Complete the following certifications/training as established by the department:
  • Taser User certification
  • Handcuffing Tactics training
  • OC Spray Certification
  • AVADE Training Levels I - III

Preferred Qualifications

• Security/Safety related certification or education.
• Prior experience in the Security field.
• Three (3) years of experience in Healthcare Security.

• Ability to perform effectively under often stressful situations.

• Good written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for the entire shift and/or double shift.
• Ability to lift, push, or pull 80 pounds.
• Ability to tolerate adverse environmental conditions for entire shift and/or double shift.

Working Environment

The employee may frequently be exposed to outside weather conditions while performing the duties of this job.
