Security Guard (Webster Center)

We are the Police Athletic League (PAL) of New York City—an independent youth-development nonprofit that has served as a bridge between police and communities across all five boroughs since 1914. PAL runs programs for children as young as two through young adults, including Head Start, after-school and summer day camps, evening teen centers, college-readiness initiatives, youth employment, juvenile-justice programs, and competitive and recreational sports.

About the role

We are looking for a Part-Time Security Guard to help create safe, welcoming spaces for kids during after-school hours. Reporting to the Elementary or Middle School Director, you will implement and promote security procedures to protect participants, staff, and property.

Responsibilities

• Monitor common areas—hallways, gym, stairwells, outdoor space—through routine patrols to prevent conflicts or unsafe behavior.
• Control entry and exit points and review security-camera feeds to ensure only authorized individuals access the building.
• De-escalate conflicts using calm verbal requests; escalate unresolved issues to supervisors.
• Respond to time-sensitive mental-health situations (e.g., suicide prevention, grief, loss) in line with PAL policies.
• Maintain clear, factual incident documentation.
• Participate in emergency procedures: fire drills, evacuations, lockdowns, shelter-in-place as directed by the Center Director.
• Build positive relationships with youth, families, and community members; interact warmly with caretakers on-site.
• Attend all required training sessions, staff meetings, and special events.

Schedule

• 15 hours per week (3 hours/day, 5 days/week).
• 15 hours of paid orientation before programming begins.
• Ongoing staff meetings and professional development throughout the year.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Current New York State Security Guard License.
• S-95 FDNY Certificate of Fitness and F-02 Fire Guard for Shelters certificate (must obtain within 90 days if not already held).
• Excellent verbal communication; ability to balance firmness with friendliness.
• Strong situational awareness and early identification of unsafe behavior.
• Proven skills in verbal de-escalation, redirection, and conflict resolution.
• Experience building rapport with diverse youth, families, and community members.
• Bilingual in Spanish, French, or Chinese preferred.

Pay

$17.00 – $20.00 per hour.
