About the role

We are seeking candidates with a passion for helping at-risk youth. The Juvenile Justice Section is committed to reducing and preventing juvenile delinquency by effectively intervening, educating, and treating youth to strengthen families and increase public safety. These temporary full-time positions are located in our Youth Development Centers (YDC) and Juvenile Detention Centers (JDC). Successful candidates will be hired through Temporary Solutions and will perform protective, security, and public contact work in State facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of the public, staff, students, and others by enforcing rules of conduct.
  • Monitor access to areas; control traffic of people and vehicles to prevent overcrowding, congestion, or hazardous incidents.
  • Provide general information to the public regarding exhibits, programs, special activities, and/or directions.
  • Check location and use of emergency alarms and equipment; execute emergency procedures; maintain daily records and reports.
  • Use security equipment (e.g., radios, switchboards/phones, flashlights, fire extinguishers, surveillance cameras, alarm panels, card access).
  • Patrol, monitor, and guard assigned areas.
  • Respond quickly and properly in emergency situations.
  • Interact with co-workers, supervisors, and the public to provide assistance and relay information.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to complete emergency medical technician (EMT) training and meet re-certification standards, if required.
  • Ability to use security equipment (e.g., radios, surveillance cameras, alarm panels).
  • Ability to patrol, monitor, and guard assigned areas.
  • Ability to respond quickly and properly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interact professionally with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Schedule

Work hours vary by facility. Candidates must be able to work weekends, holidays on a rotating basis, and a variable work schedule to meet the needs of juveniles and their families.

Management Preferences (Optional)

  • Basic knowledge of standard security practices.
  • Basic knowledge of standard methods of reporting emergencies.
  • Basic knowledge of the items/property to be guarded.
