About the Role

Under general supervision, this position ensures the security and environmental safekeeping of assigned locations within the school district, including parking garages, parking lots, and school campuses. The role involves monitoring authorized access, addressing security violations per district policies, and reporting illegal activities to administration or law enforcement.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
  • Unlock assigned locations and maintain security and environmental safekeeping of school campuses, gateways, parking garages, and lots.
  • Ensure students out of class have proper authorization; verify student departures and report unauthorized exits.
  • Provide security at entrances and gateways by checking visitor and parent identification and authorization; offer direction and information as requested.
  • Patrol parking areas to secure garages and lots and ensure compliance with parking/permitting policies.
  • Monitor assigned locations for environmental hazards or injurious activities, such as vandalism, theft, or illegal substance use/sale.
  • Maintain personal physical safety and monitor interactions for proper physical behaviors among students, staff, or others.
  • Operate radio communication equipment to report and receive information related to job duties.
  • Secure and transport truant students or non-compliant trespassers to school administrators; request law enforcement assistance for non-compliant individuals.
  • Assist students, staff, or others with vehicle issues, such as locked keys.
  • Guide school buses for proper drop-off and pick-up formation; set traffic control devices like cones and signs; maintain logs of bus arrival times.
  • Record information related to security and monitoring activities, such as names, arrival times, vehicle descriptions, tardy slips, and tardy lists.
  • Stay updated on current technology relevant to the role and attend district-supported training to maintain required skill levels.
  • Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Up to six months of previous security, military, or enforcement vocational training or experience, with demonstrated interpersonal communication skills for addressing potential conflicts.
  • Satisfaction of district background verification.

  • Data Utilization: Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and analyze data, exercising discretion in data classification and referencing analysis to established standards.
  • Human Interaction: Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and interpretation to others on applying procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Equipment Utilization: Ability to operate standard radio communication equipment.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic addition and subtraction.
  • Functional Reasoning: Ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions with some latitude for independent judgment in semi-routine standardized work.
  • Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical Ability: Tasks involve light physical effort, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects up to 10 pounds. May require extended periods of walking or working at an assigned station.
  • Sensory Requirements: Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination; some tasks require oral communication ability.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse conditions, such as dust, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, traffic hazards, and violence.
