About the Role
Positions in this class are assigned to the local school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, responsibilities include screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and other school security operations. Receives guidance and assistance from the security team leader on more difficult or unusual situations.
Responsibilities
- Screen visitor access to school facilities
- Maintain student class attendance records
- Assist in school security operations
- Patrol school premises, including outdoor areas in inclement and extreme weather conditions
- Intervene in fights and physically restrain persons when necessary
- Work flexible hours, including weekends and occasional overtime, to provide maximum security coverage
- Wear the designated security uniform
Physical Demands
- Sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons
- Stamina to spend long periods walking and standing to complete security patrol duties
- Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions
Requirements
- High School or GED diploma (Associate’s degree preferred)
- College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields
- Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment
- Experience in investigation (desirable)
- Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer
- Valid Maryland class C noncommercial driver’s license, or equivalent
- First aid and CPR certification
Qualifications
- Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques
- Knowledge of security practices and procedures
- Knowledge of investigative procedures (desirable)
- Familiarity with school and MCPS policies and procedures on student attendance, suspension, student involvement, and standards of student behavior
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff
- Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students under team leader supervision
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
- Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS)
- Bilingual English/Spanish candidates preferred
Pay
The wage range for this position is between $25.24 and $36.67 per hour, based on years of service.
