About the role

The Student Assistant Secured Watch Stander is responsible for supporting the safety and security of the Training Ship Golden Bear. Secured Watch consists of two (2) licensed track Engine and two (2) licensed track Deck cadets on duty at all times. Watch assignments will generally consist of four (4)-hour shifts unless otherwise approved.

Responsibilities

  • Stand a deck or engine watch aboard Training Ship Golden Bear.
  • Follow all Night and Standing Orders.
  • Complete all required rounds.
  • Maintain an accurate and legible logbook.
  • Maintain controlled access to the port and surrounding areas.
  • Provide a thorough watch turnover to the person relieving the watch.
  • Follow established shipboard safety, security, and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other watch-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be a currently enrolled student.
  • Must be fit for duty.
  • Each watch must include at least one qualified upper-level student.
  • Upper-Level Students: Knowledge of fire safety and emergency procedures; flooding safety and emergency procedures; overall security procedures; appropriate power outage protocols and procedures; proper incident notification procedures; demonstrated competency in completing all required rounds.
  • First-Year/Transfer Students: Must be fit for duty; able to follow Night and Standing Orders and instructions from upper-level Watch Stander or ship personnel; willing and able to learn required watch, safety, and security procedures.

Pay

Hourly rate: $20.

Schedule

Up to 20 hours per week. Secured Watch coverage required for the following holidays:

  • Labor Day (September 7): Secured Watch begins Friday, September 4 at 16:00 and ends Tuesday, September 8 at 08:00.
  • Veterans Day (November 11): Secured Watch begins Tuesday, November 10 at 16:00 and ends Thursday, November 12 at 08:00.
  • Thanksgiving Break (November 23–29): Secured Watch begins Friday, November 20 at 16:00 and ends Monday, November 30 at 08:00.
