About the Role
Organize and direct the Secondary Orchestra, providing instruction and leadership to develop a high-quality performing organization.
Responsibilities
- Maintain student records.
- Maintain inventory of all music and instruments.
- Coordinate the purchase of necessary equipment and materials.
- Schedule and conduct performances.
- Organize and direct participation in major concerts.
- Organize, plan, schedule, and direct orchestra practices and performances.
- Organize and direct performances at school activities as needed.
- Assist students to try out for and participate in district, regional, and state festivals.
- Coordinate the orchestra's participation in community events or festivals.
- Articulate and promote the program with feeder programs.
- Assist students to organize and oversee fundraising activities in accordance with school and district policies, as necessary.
- Supervise students during activities and provide chaperones as needed.
- Maintain student discipline in accordance with the student K-12 Code of Conduct.
- Maintain two-way communications with parents of participants as needed.
- Prepare and submit an end-of-year summary to the High School base school principal.
Supervises students participating in this program and directs activities of any program volunteers.
Requirements
- PA Music Certification or commensurate experience or knowledge of orchestra music and ensemble direction is desirable.
- Respect student and family rights to privacy and comply with all laws, regulations, and District policies governing confidential information.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating, or procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, their parents, or employees of the district.
- Ability to communicate positively with members of the media.
- Guide appropriate record-keeping of student accounts related to the program.
- Basic computer skills in word processing and database are helpful.
- Exhibit qualities of leadership and organizational ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration.
- Apply knowledge of current research and theory in the specific field.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
- Communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
- Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Physical Demands
- Frequently required to walk and stand; occasionally sit and may run.
- Frequently bend or twist at the trunk while performing duties.
- Frequently squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, reach forward, and repeat the same hand motion.
- Moderate lifting of equipment weighing between 10-50 pounds may be necessary.
- Good depth perception and ability to occasionally see objects/persons at a distance.
- Frequently required to hear conversation in quiet as well as noisy environments and determine the direction of sound.
- Must be able to communicate directions to students effectively.
Work Environment
- Work inside or outside depending on the event.
- Occasionally meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other workers.
- Direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of students.
- Noise level varies from quiet to loud.
