Seasonal Trail Crew Technician

Job Summary

Performs maintenance on County trails. Routinely patrols County park trails and performs responsible semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of trails.

Essential Functions

• Performs routine trail maintenance through pruning, mowing, clearing, etc.
• Performs trail construction of new trails along with re-routes and re-alignments of existing trail sections as required
• Trail sign installation and maintenance
• Clearing down trees from County trails after storms
• Routinely monitors County park trails to identify maintenance/safety issues
• Operates power equipment and a variety of hand tools
• Provides information and assistance to park users and seeks voluntary compliance with park rules and regulations
• Collects suggestions and recommendations from trail users
• Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment
• Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in equipment operation
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods occasionally under unfavorable weather conditions

Experience

Experience in the operation of automotive equipment and the performance of manual labor.

Required Education and Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Work frequently requires strenuous physical tasks, including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying items weighing 20 to 50 pounds
• Frequently exposed to driving and sitting in a vehicle for extended periods of time
• Operation of mowing equipment both riding and walking over rough terrain
• Regular walking, biking and all-terrain vehicle operation over difficult terrain
• Requires working outside in adverse weather
• Flexible hours including weekends and holidays as needed
• Regular contact with park employees and volunteers
• Frequent contact with the public

Salary

The hiring range for this position is $16.50. Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. This is a part time, FLSA non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, P-60.
