Position Overview

Security Officers help maintain a safe, welcoming learning environment by preventing and responding to safety risks, building positive relationships with students and staff, and supporting school operations during the academic day and events.

Essential Duties

  • Campus patrol and visibility: Continuously patrol interiors and exteriors (hallways, stairwells, restrooms, parking lots, athletic fields) to deter theft, vandalism, unauthorized entry, and unsafe conduct; check doors, lighting, emergency egress routes, and camera views; note facility issues for maintenance.
  • Access control and visitor management: Monitor entrances, screen and badge visitors, verify authorization, maintain sign-in logs, and redirect or escort unauthorized persons from campus.
  • Student support and supervision: Monitor transitions, cafeterias, assemblies, and events; build respectful rapport; use de-escalation and restorative approaches to keep students on task and learning.
  • Incident response and documentation: Respond promptly to fights, medical issues, alarms, and other incidents; stabilize scenes; notify administration and public safety; write clear incident and misconduct reports; maintain activity logs and bus counts.
  • Traffic and events: Provide parking/traffic control, enforce parking rules, and staff athletic, performing arts, and special events as assigned.
  • Collaboration and communication: Coordinate with administrators, deans, counselors, nurses, SROs, and local agencies when appropriate; communicate safety expectations to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Compliance and training: Follow district security procedures, student conduct policies, and accountability standards; complete required training and refreshers.
  • Other assigned duties: Support locker distribution/searches consistent with policy; deliver sensitive materials when needed; support drills and actual emergencies (fire, severe weather, intruder).

Qualifications And Competencies

  • Minimum: High school diploma or GED; prior security, school discipline, or law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Licensure/clearance: Ability to meet all district/state background requirements; any state/local credentials applicable to school security (e.g., PERC if required).
  • Skills: Situational awareness, sound judgment, and ethical practice in fast-paced environments; verbal de-escalation, conflict resolution, and relationship-building with adolescents from diverse backgrounds; clear written communication for accurate incident and activity reporting; basic technology proficiency (cameras, access control, email/forms); reliability, teamwork, and professionalism, including impeccable punctuality and consistent follow-through.
  • Physical and Working Conditions: Frequent standing and walking for extended periods (up to a full shift), stair climbing, indoor/outdoor patrols in varied weather; occasional lifting up to 20 lbs; ability to respond urgently across campus.

Uphold a safe, orderly climate; reduce serious incidents; support attendance and positive perceptions of safety; adhere to district accountability standards.
