Seasonal position in the Primate Department caring for chimpanzees, orangutans, baboons, gibbons, and tamarins.
Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain animal environments
- Prepare and distribute daily enrichment
- Observe animal behavior and ensure optimal animal welfare
- Support a variety of research activities
- Educate zoo guests
- Complete daily husbandry tasks and recordkeeping
- Display a professional attitude and appearance to visitors, volunteers, and co-workers
Requirements
- Minimum of one (1) year animal care experience, preferably with primates (college coursework in an animal-related field may substitute)
- High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree in a Life Science area strongly preferred)
- Demonstrates patience, gentleness, respect, and consistency with animals
- Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures
- Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently
- Ability to ascend/descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain while maintaining body equilibrium
- Ability to crouch, bend, and kneel for prolonged periods
- Exceptional visual acuity and ability to communicate, comprehend, and decipher information accurately using a two-way radio
- Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens and dangerous chemicals (e.g., chlorine bleach, cleaning agents)
- Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines
Schedule
- Seasonal, temporary assignment expected to last approximately six (6) months
- 40 hours per week
- Requires availability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
Pay
$13.00 per hour
