About the role

This position performs electrical work using journey level skills to install, maintain, and repair electrical and electronic systems and equipment in a large complex activated sludge wastewater facility and related off-site locations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, installs, and repairs: Electrical Systems including programmable logic controllers (currently Allen-Bradley devices); counters, timers, and other such electronic devices; motors (fractional to 1,000 hp); conduit and wiring; temperature controllers; level controllers; HVAC systems; chemical feed control systems; compressed air systems; lighting, various alarm systems, and other equipment and controls commonly used in treatment and handling of sewage.
  • Assists in scheduling of electrical work performed and equipment shutdowns; responsible for planning specific work assignments.
  • Develops and/or modifies electrical devices and control systems used in the Wastewater Division under direction and code authority of Electrician 2 or Supervisor.
  • Trains on specific electrical control systems, new equipment operation, and proper electrical safety procedures used in Wastewater Division.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on plant electrical equipment necessary to ensure operation of the Wastewater Division.
  • Troubleshoots and isolates problems in malfunctioning electrical devices and control systems.
  • Follows safety procedures when isolating equipment including tagging and lockout requirements.
  • Performs major maintenance rebuilds, repairs, and modifications as required by task orders generated from all work sections.
  • Assists Wastewater Division mechanics in completion of mechanical tasks, as assigned.
  • Works independently, with initiative and high standards of quality and productivity.
  • May be required to repair electrical equipment during/after a chlorine leak using a self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Cleans spills of oil, sludge, and other materials found in work area; keeps equipment neat, clean, and properly stored.
  • Works overtime, or on-call, as deemed necessary during emergency or other situations.
  • Maintains accurate written maintenance work records and reports.
  • Supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of: Current National Electric Code. Standard electrical trade maintenance, construction, and design techniques. Hazards and safety precautions involving electrical work and working in moving traffic.
  • Ability To Repair, rebuild, troubleshoot, evaluate, and perform necessary repairs to equipment and electrical systems in Wastewater Division with minimal supervision; remedy the situation using safe and effective problem-solving techniques. Work independently; exercise good judgment. Keep accurate records; prepare written reports. Follow verbally and written technically complex equipment maintenance procedures such as equipment operations and maintenance manuals; read and understand complex blueprints, electrical diagrams, and related schematics. Apply current electrical methods, practices, code requirements, and safety standards. Perform maintenance on high voltage (15kV) switchgear. Prioritize and organize work assignments. Communicate well verbally, and in writing, in technical language appropriate to electrical issues. Work well with co-workers.
  • Work from ladders, boom trucks, and other devices. BE ON-CALL AND/OR WORK ROTATING SHIFTS THAT MAY INCLUDE DAYS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS; BE AVAILABLE AND RESPONSIBLE FOR EMERGENCY CALL-BACK AS NECESSARY.
  • PASS A CRIMINAL RECORDS CHECK MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS.

Education / Training

  • Specialized training in electrical construction and maintenance.
  • Two years journey-level experience in the electrical trades.
  • A valid Oregon driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard.
  • State of Oregon Limited Journeyman Manufacturing Plant (PJ) electrical license or higher is required.

Please describe any experience you have operating safety meters used in detection of hazardous atmospheres. Also, list any experience you have working in hazardous locations along with common safety precautions generally used. Please include: Period of time you were performing the work (i.e.: 2years, 60% of time), your specific responsibilities, and employer / immediate Supervisor. Please describe in detail your experience with electrical construction including new electrical equipment installation, electrical equipment retrofitting, conduit installation, and similar activities. Please include: Period of time you were performing the work (i.e.: 2years, 60% of time), your specific responsibilities, and employer / immediate Supervisor.
