Seasonal Maintenance Assistant

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Performs assigned tasks in maintaining the City's park system, surface water system, and other City facilities, including lawn mowing, tree trimming, weeding of flower beds, and vegetation management.
• Uses a variety of hand and power operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, blowers, hand compactors, pumps, drills, brooms, weed eaters, lawn mowers, and other gas powered and electric hand tools to complete assigned tasks.
• Operates machinery and equipment such as a pickup truck or other light duty vehicles to complete assigned maintenance tasks.
• Performs routine daily maintenance of equipment including fueling, greasing, and checking fluid levels as needed.
• Works in compliance with federal and state laws, OSHA, WISHA, and Department Policies and Procedures.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

• Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner, providing responses within scope of knowledge or referring the matter to employees of higher classification.
• Keeps records of daily tasks and incidents.
• Waters flower baskets, assists in asphalt patching, and signs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills And Abilities Required

• Working knowledge of maintenance equipment and procedures.
• Working knowledge of safety standards and precautions related to maintenance.
• Ability to use the mechanical tools of the trade.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions.
• Ability to work cooperatively in a work crew.
• Ability to perform manual labor in all weather conditions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
• Skilled in using hand tools and equipment of the laboring trade.
• Ability to work independently.
• Operate pickup trucks and other light duty vehicles skillfully and safely.

Physical Demands And Work Environment

• Sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Frequent talking or hearing.
• Stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Exposure to a variety of potential hazards associated with working near or in traffic, park activities, and maintenance equipment.
• Duties require strenuous physical activity such as lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs. routinely, shoveling, and other manual labor.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Valid Washington State Driver's License.
• First Aid Certification and CPR (preferred).
• Flagger's Card (preferred but not required).
• Education and experience that provides the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the essential duties of the job.
