About the role

We are hiring a Seasonal Hire to join UTHealth McGovern Medical School, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in Houston, TX. In this role, you will maintain lab genomic datasets and lab server management. Seasonal Hires are temporary and may not be employed for more than four and a half months, either full-time or part-time, and must be at least 16 years old.

Responsibilities

  • Under close supervision, conduct research activities according to research protocol, including:
    • Patient recruiting and screening
    • Traditional laboratory experiments and activities
    • Informatics and field interviewer recruiting, screening, and training
    • Animal laboratory work
  • Maintain lab genomic datasets and lab server management
  • Perform sequencing data demultiplexing and recording
  • Align sequencing data to the genome
  • Maintain clean laboratory equipment and/or work area to ensure a safe and efficient environment
  • Collect, evaluate, and interpret research data for principal investigators and other researchers
  • Update notebooks, records, and databases as needed
  • Stay abreast of new and updated protocols for the research department
  • Order laboratory and/or other supplies as directed by senior research staff
  • Coordinate the work of laboratory technicians and assistants to ensure efficient, timely, and high-quality results
  • Comply with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulations, and codes
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16 years
  • High School diploma or equivalent (preferred)
  • Pursuing or completed B.S. degree in Biology & Bioinformatics (preferred)
  • Technical skills in Linux Operating System, Bash/Shell language, server management, and knowledge of epigenomic datasets such as RNA-seq and ChIP-seq (strongly preferred)
  • Two years of experience working with Linux, Bash/Shell, server management, and epigenomic datasets (preferred)

Physical Requirements

Exerts up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, and/or up to 5 pounds constantly to move objects. This position may involve work with potentially hazardous chemical, biological, or radioactive agents.
