About the Role
This is a seasonal general laborer position at a facility that loads and unloads barges and trucks. The role involves a wide variety of duties based on the daily operational needs, including cleaning and repair of barges. Responsibilities will vary depending on the facility and location.
Responsibilities
- Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
- Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable), including wearing appropriate PPE.
- Perform deckhand responsibilities such as reading drafts, opening/closing lids, and tying off barges.
- Perform barge loading duties, including loading barges to meet draft and quality requirements and overseeing deckhand(s).
- Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate locations while maintaining grain quality.
- Complete documentation accurately and legibly.
- Perform general clean-up tasks, including sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and other housekeeping duties.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs where applicable.
- Depending on the facility, may unload barges, clean barges, move product to storage, load trucks or rail using heavy equipment, operate dryers, and operate various heavy equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- No prior experience required; 1 year of experience in an industrial environment preferred.
- Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to complete documentation requirements.
- Ability to follow directions, use logical thought processes, and troubleshoot problems.
- Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment.
- Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned tasks.
- Strong focus on exceptional customer service, both internally and externally.
Physical Demands & Requirements
- Constantly/continuously balance, bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, and squat.
- Frequently climb stairs, ladders, and work at significant heights.
- Constantly/continuously concentrate on tasks without distraction.
- Ability to distinguish grade, color, odor, and damage characteristics in grain samples at some facilities.
- Ability to distinguish differences in odor intensity or quality using the nose.
- Frequently grasp and reach.
- Lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously, depending on daily needs.
- Meet requirements for and utilize all applicable PPE.
- Pass all required testing under FRA and DOT for this position (where applicable).
- Work in confined spaces.
- Safely walk on barge surfaces and work around deep/swift water.
- Constantly/continuously stand and walk.
- Understand and communicate verbally, in person, and over two-way radio, including recognizing emergency alarms.
- Understand and communicate written instructions.
- Walk safely on top of railcars, open gates, operate vibrators, etc., where applicable.
- Work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed.
- Work in environments with high dust levels around grain and other bulk products.
- Work outside in extreme weather conditions.
- Remain acutely aware of surroundings and quickly adjust to signals or changes in the environment.
- Use near, far, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception, for tasks such as identifying grain problems.
- Required to work rotating 12-hour shifts, including non-standard business hours (Convent, LA location only).
Environmental Conditions
- Work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
- Frequently required to use personal protective equipment.
- 5%-20% travel may be required at some facilities, including off-site training and work at alternate locations.
Pay
The expected base pay range for this role is $16.00 - $26.00 per hour. Actual pay offered may vary depending on work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and relevant experience.
