About the role

Stantec is a leading global provider of professional consulting services in the fields of environmental sciences, engineering, and archaeology. We are currently seeking experienced Archaeology Technicians to join our dynamic team on a project basis. As an Archaeology Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting our field programs by assisting with data collection and analysis.

This hourly, on-call position will support the archaeological fieldwork needs of the Midwest region. Projects typically run from March through November, with opportunities to travel for fieldwork during the winter months. Multi-week field assignments are common.

Responsibilities

  • Work with field crews to conduct archaeological fieldwork.
  • Demonstrate skills and experience with field tasks such as precontact and historic artifact identification, as well as soil analysis and interpretation.
  • Work under the supervision of a field director or crew lead in Wisconsin and neighboring states.
  • Perform occasional laboratory duties on a project-specific basis, including artifact processing, classification, and curation, artifact photography, database management, mapping, and report layout.
  • Travel extensively to project sites, which may include local and out-of-town assignments.
  • Prioritize safety in field and laboratory practices, including following established safety protocols for hazardous conditions such as extreme weather, wildlife encounters, and excavation safety.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment including GPS units, digital cameras, tablets, and hand tools.
  • Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings and follow site-specific safety plans.
  • Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions are identified.

  • Conduct Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery.
  • Maintain the ability to travel to and from onsite jobs and office locations as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a related field is required.
  • Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role is required.
  • Technical expertise or specialty within Archaeology/Anthropology is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Upper Midwest archaeology and field methods is preferred.
