Seasonal Archaeology Field Technician

About the role

Stantec is a leading global provider of professional consulting services in the fields of environmental sciences, engineering, and archaeology. We are currently seeking experienced Archaeology Technicians to join our dynamic team on a project basis. As an Archaeology Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting our field programs by assisting with data collection and analysis. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including solar fields, residential developments, wetland restorations, major urban revitalization projects, pipelines, transmission lines, transportation projects, and excavation and investigations of cemeteries.

Responsibilities

• Work with field crews to conduct archaeological fieldwork
• Demonstrate skills and experience with field tasks such as precontact and historic artifact identification, as well as soil analysis and interpretation
• Work under the supervision of a field director or crew lead in Wisconsin and neighboring states
• Perform occasional laboratory duties on a project-specific basis
• Travel extensively to project sites
• Prioritize safety in field and laboratory practices
• Operate and maintain field equipment including GPS units, digital cameras, tablets, and hand tools
• Follow established safety protocols for hazardous conditions including extreme weather, wildlife encounters, and excavation safety
• Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings and follow site-specific safety plans
• Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions are identified

• Conduct Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery
• Perform laboratory duties including artifact processing, classification, and curation, as well as artifact photography, database management, mapping, and report layout
• Maintain the ability to travel to and from onsite jobs and the Plymouth office locations as needed
• Valid driver’s license

Education and Experience

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field is required
• Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role is required
• Technical expertise or specialty within Archaeology/Anthropology is advantageous
• Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps is highly desirable
• Working knowledge of Upper Midwest archaeology and field methods is preferred

Work Environment

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. When conducting non-local fieldwork, paid travel time, per diem, and single occupancy hotel rooms are provided. Stantec fleet or rental cars are often provided. Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
