Under the supervision of the Director and/or Nurse Manager, the scrub nurse/tech assists surgeons on all operative and endoscopic procedures for patients ranging in age from birth to geriatric.
Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in nursing or technical degree in nursing or surgical technician
- 4 years additional relevant experience
- 1+ year nursing or surgical technician experience
- CST - Certified Surgical Technologist (required)
- LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - State Licensure (preferred)
Responsibilities
- Ensures operating room is ready for procedure
- Assists in preparing room and operating instruments and supplies using aseptic technique
- Prepares sterile back table and mayo stand with instruments appropriate for procedures
- Drapes sterile field or assists surgeons with draping
- Counts all laps, sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse
- Assists surgeons with surgeries and keeps track of all sponges, needles, and instruments
- Communicates with the circulating nurse on case status and needed supplies
- Ensures specimens are handed off to the circulating nurse
- Cleans operative site and applies dressing as directed by the surgeon
- Cleans the surgical room after procedures
- Gathers instruments and cleans mayo and back table(s)
- Assists in moving patient from OR table to bed or stretcher
- Takes instruments to Central Sterile for processing; disposes of trash and linen
- Documents required information and data accurately and in a timely fashion
- Collects and prioritizes data based on patient condition and needs
- Identifies issues and develops diagnoses based on assessment data
- Adheres to hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines
- Performs duties in alignment with the organization’s core values, mission, and vision
- Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility, including specialty certifications
- Attends staff meetings, mandatory in-services, and completes competency evaluations on time
- Demonstrates competency in providing age-specific care to all patients
- Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate
