Screening Chemist

About the role

Analyze urine, oral fluid, and sweat patch aliquots for the presence of drugs. Perform duties at three progressive levels, with higher levels requiring additional training and assessments.

Responsibilities

• Level 1: Operate, monitor, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot instrumentation including Beckman analyzers, handheld ATAGO refractometer, ATG Sorter, Automated Rotator, and Tecan. Perform proper material labeling, pipetting of controls and samples, sequence entry, and sample loading. Receive and prepare urine, oral fluid, and sweat patch aliquots for testing. Identify aliquots by batch for computer download. Operate automated analyzers during testing. Prepare quality control, maintenance, reagent, and equipment records. Review and document testing procedures. Release properly reviewed results to the LIMS. Maintain confidentiality of all CRL, subsidiaries, legal entities, and client information. Comply with applicable federal, state, and local safety and health regulations. Keep work area neat and clean.
• Level 2: Perform all Level 1 duties. Operate and maintain the Rudolph J357 Automatic Refractometer for specific gravity testing and the SevenExcellence pH Meter for pH testing of urine specimens.
• Level 3: Perform all Level 2 duties. Complete daily, weekly, monthly, bi-annual, and as-needed maintenance training including cleaning probes, lanes, wash wells, mixer stations, buffer units, and air filters; sonicating wash nozzles; changing photometer lamps; and performing cuvette overhauls. Successfully complete a troubleshooting assessment demonstrating ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve common screening instrument errors.

Requirements

• Education: Doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, or associate degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, or biological science.
• Experience:
  • High Complexity Testing: Bachelor’s Degree or higher requires training/experience as specified in 42CFR493.1489. Associate’s degree in chemical or biological sciences requires 3 months on-the-job experience. Associate’s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory requires no additional experience.
  • Acting Technical Supervisor: Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution or equivalent, plus 4 years of pertinent laboratory experience.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly required to walk between departments.
• Sitting for extended periods of time.
• Repetitive use of hands, fingers, wrists, and elbows for operating computer and telephone.
• Reaching with hands and arms, and reaching above the shoulder.
• Bending or stooping.
• Squatting or crouching.
• Ability to regularly lift and move up to 25 pounds.

Equipment

• Must operate and maintain automated testing instrumentation.

Other

• Must be able to work overtime as necessary to complete workload. Rotation may include Saturday shift.
• Specimens consist of body fluids and must be regarded as potentially infectious; exposure to caustics, flammables, solvents, carcinogens, and reactive compounds.

$24.00 - $46.00
