Scott M. Smith Presidential Endowed Chair in Anesthesiology

About the Role

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah invites applications and nominations for the Scott M. Smith Presidential Endowed Chair in Anesthesiology. The chair was established in 2008 in honor of Dr. Scott M. Smith, a pioneer in Utah’s anesthesiology history. The position is intended for anesthesiologists, other physician scientists, or PhD‑scientists with strong records of translational research related to anesthesiology, including pain medicine, neuroscience, echocardiography, clinical pharmacology, peri‑operative analytics, bioengineering, and personalized medicine.

Responsibilities

• Foster a research culture within the Department of Anesthesiology.
• Advance interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research collaborations across University research entities.
• Contribute to the Department’s research council leadership.
• Mentor junior investigators and organize laboratory activities.

Requirements

• Track record of publications in preclinical and/or clinical research.
• Evidence of successful federal grant funding as the principal investigator.
• Proficiency in research mentorship and laboratory organization.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current NIH funding.
• Research interests that complement one or more of the Department’s strategic research priorities.
