Physician, Department Chair of Anesthesiology

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), a member hospital of Dartmouth Health (DH), is seeking an experienced, collaborative physician leader to serve as Department Chair of Anesthesia.

About the role

• Maintain an active clinical practice while leading a team of anesthesiologists and anesthesiologist assistants
• Foster a culture of collaboration, support provider development, and lead quality and performance improvement
• Partner with the Director of Perioperative Services and Chair of Surgical Services to ensure alignment with institutional goals and strategic priorities while advancing clinical excellence and patient-centered care

Responsibilities

• Maintain an active clinical practice and serve as a role model across anesthesia services
• Set strategic goals for the department and lead efforts to improve patient outcomes and streamline perioperative workflows
• Oversee quality improvement initiatives, monitor clinical performance, and ensure compliance with institutional standards and regulatory requirements
• Meet regularly with anesthesia staff to support clinical growth and advancement
• Collaborate with administrative leaders locally and at the DH system level to optimize staffing models, operating room schedules, and patient flow
• Participate in department budgeting, monitor finances, and revenue integrity
• Participate in provider recruitment, retention, onboarding, and succession planning
• Build and maintain strong relationships with surgical colleagues and system-wide partners

About the practice

• 5 operating rooms and 2 endoscopy rooms running daily
• Surgical services include general surgery, vascular, orthopedics, urology, OB/GYN, robotic, and bariatric services
• No spine, neurosurgical, cardiac, or thoracic cases
• 400 deliveries annually

Requirements

• Advanced clinical degree (MD or DO)
• Postgraduate training in residency program
• Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice and 2 years of leadership experience
• Current or eligible for Vermont Medical License
• ABMS Board Certification
• Active hospital staff membership

Pay

Salary Range: $550,000 - $560,000
