The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), managed by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI), is a leading research and development organization operating state-of-the-art radio telescope facilities for the international scientific community. NRAO has been pivotal in advancing the study of black holes, galaxies, and the early universe. This position is based in Socorro, NM, with opportunities for partial telework.

About the Role

The appointment will be on the NRAO Scientist track, with 25% discretionary research time and 75% functional responsibilities. Staff scientists are expected to be versatile and adaptable, contributing to both scientific research and operational support as the Observatory evolves.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an active independent research program utilizing Observatory facilities.
• Support research to enhance telescope capabilities, aligning with personal research and broader community needs.
• Contribute to the Observatory’s mission in a collaborative environment, fostering motivation, leadership, and teamwork.
• Participate in scientific outreach, public education, and broader impact activities.
• Perform calibration and testing of Observatory instruments, track performance, and collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot issues.
• Support Observatory users in relevant technical and scientific areas.
• Aid in the design, development, and testing of future telescopes or capabilities, including requirements writing, project oversight, and commissioning.
• Contribute to software design, development, testing, and documentation.
• Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a research and development setting. May occasionally require outdoor work, high-altitude tasks, or exposure to varying weather conditions.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a related field.
• At least 1 year of post-doctoral experience in radio astronomy, geodesy, or a closely related field.
• Authorization to work in the United States (H-1B visa sponsorship is not available for this position).

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of radio and/or millimeter wavelength astronomy.
• Experience with observatory science operations.
• Established record of independent research.

Skills and Competencies

• Ability to convey technical information clearly to diverse audiences, including developers, engineers, and scientists.
• Collaborative and respectful interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with scientific computing, observatory software, or radio astronomy technology.

Pay

The starting salary for this position ranges from $85,000 to $138,000 per year, depending on education, experience, skills, and internal equity.
