Open Rank-Research Scientist, Senior Research Scientist

Open-rank faculty position (Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist) in the Cape-Colorado-Combat (C3) Global Trauma Network Lab, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Full-time (1.0 FTE), on-site in Aurora, CO.

About the role

The incumbent will lead statistical and epidemiologic analyses of clinical data within a federally funded, multi-disciplinary research lab focused on trauma and emergency medicine, primarily in South Africa. This position reports to the C3 Lab Principal Investigator and collaborates with clinician-investigators, biostatisticians, data analysts, and research staff. The role involves study design, advanced statistical analysis (SAS/R), data visualization, scientific writing, and mentoring junior staff. Domestic travel may be required for conferences or stakeholder meetings; international travel is optional.

Responsibilities

• Provide biostatistical expertise in study design, data management, analysis, and manuscript preparation.
• Collaborate with clinician-investigators to develop rigorous analytic plans addressing clinically relevant research questions.
• Conduct advanced statistical analyses using methods such as causal inference, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, machine learning, and clinical trials.
• Create high-quality data visualizations and communicate statistical methods/findings to a multi-disciplinary team.
• Co-author abstracts, presentations, and scientific manuscripts.
• Mentor junior research staff to strengthen data collection, management, and curation practices.
• Develop subject-matter expertise and contribute to shaping the lab’s research direction.

Senior Research Scientist distinctions: Lead more complex analyses, exercise greater autonomy, assume managerial roles in mentoring/supervising staff, and collaborate on grant applications (study design, analysis plans, sample size calculations).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Doctoral degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, health-related data science, or related field.
• Research Scientist: At least 2 years of experience in an academic medical/research setting (post-doctoral training counts); 1+ publication as co-author; strong SAS/R skills.
• Senior Research Scientist: At least 4 years of experience in an academic medical/research setting (post-doctoral training counts); 3+ publications as co-author; grant-writing experience; strong SAS/R skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience in an academic medical/research setting.
• Expertise in causal inference, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, machine learning, GIS, or clinical trials.
• Experience curating analytical datasets from clinical sources (EMR/EHR, abstracted records).
• Experience applying novel quantitative approaches to complex analytic problems.
• Collaborative experience as a statistician/methodologist on multi-disciplinary teams.
• Interest/experience in global health, emergency care, or trauma-related research.
• Experience presenting at seminars/scientific meetings.
• Ability to manage timelines for multiple concurrent research projects.

About the team

The C3 Global Trauma Network Lab is the data/analytic hub of a multi-disciplinary research network focused on improving trauma and injury care in resource-constrained settings. Led by Dr. Nee-Kofi Mould-Millman, the lab operates within the Department of Emergency Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus, collaborating with U.S. and South African partners. The lab is funded by NIH and the U.S. Department of Defense, with a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals. The team includes clinician-investigators, biostatisticians, data analysts, and research assistants, fostering a highly collaborative and productive environment.

Pay

Hiring range: Research Scientist starts at $90,000; Senior Research Scientist starts at $100,000. Salary increases with experience. Position is not eligible for overtime unless non-exempt.
