About the role

Join EAG Laboratories as a Scientist specializing in LC-MS analysis. Candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of our Sunnyvale, California laboratory. In this role, you will perform hands-on materials characterization, interpret and report high-quality analytical data, and work directly with clients to support real-world technical investigations. You will discuss LC-MS data and experimental design with clients, connecting analytical methods and results to broader materials and product development challenges.

Our clients include leading technology companies, consumer product manufacturers, biotech companies, and aerospace suppliers working in the early phases of product development. Scientists in our Materials Characterization group operate advanced analytical instrumentation, including FTIR, Raman, GC-MS, and LC-MS, and collaborate closely with peers to understand problems, define solutions, develop analytical approaches, and execute high-impact analyses.

We are particularly interested in people with extensive (multi-year) hands-on experience with LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry). Supplemental skills and hands-on experience with GC-MS (Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry) and/or GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography) are also highly desired. This position requires comfort with all stages of the analytical process: experimental design, preparing samples, optimizing analysis conditions, acquiring data, interpreting chromatograms and mass spectra, writing reports, and providing insight into the meaning of the data.

Responsibilities

• Perform hands-on materials characterization using LC-MS and other analytical techniques.
• Interpret and report high-quality analytical data to support client investigations.
• Discuss LC-MS data and experimental design with clients, connecting results to broader materials and product development challenges.
• Plan, set up, and execute analyses using advanced instrumentation (FTIR, Raman, GC-MS, LC-MS).
• Write reports and process previously acquired data.
• Collaborate in internal group meetings to plan instrument use and meet client deadlines.
• Engage with customers to discuss prior reports or future analyses.
• Participate in meetings with the commercial team and customers to solve client problems.
• Develop new analysis methods for emerging materials.
• Produce marketing materials or write technical papers.
• Work with support teams or vendors to fine-tune instruments.
• Pursue training goals or learn adjacent techniques.
• Maintain communication and collaboration with colleagues to keep multiple projects moving forward.

Requirements

• M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or Materials Science/Engineering.
• Minimum of 3 years of industrial experience with 2 years of hands-on LC-MS experience, including data interpretation to identify materials and mixtures.
• Strong foundation in organic chemistry and practical laboratory experience with organic materials and polymers.
• Extensive experience solving problems involving organic/polymer materials.
• Prior experience with GPC and/or GC-MS is preferred.
• Experience in instrument troubleshooting.
• Additional experience with other relevant analytical techniques (e.g., thermal analysis) is desirable.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to move about inside the office or laboratory to access file cabinets, machinery, and equipment.
• Ability to continuously operate a personal computer or lab equipment for extended periods (4+ hours).
• Physical dexterity to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively for keyboard and lab equipment operation, telephone use, and accessing file cabinets or overhead storage.
• Ability to remain in a stationary position 90% of the time.
• Ability to speak and hear clearly for accurate communication in person, over the telephone, online, and in group settings.
• Capacity to learn new tasks, remember processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, make timely decisions, and communicate with visitors.
