About the role

RedLine Performance Solutions (RedLine) has been in the HPC solutions engineering services business for over 26 years, delivering high standards of excellence for new hires. We provide services ranging from full life-cycle HPC systems engineering to remote managed services and HPC program analysis, located in the Washington, DC area.

This position supports the National Weather Service (NWS) Central Operations (NCO), which implements, maintains, and provides Tier-2 support for the operational production suite of weather prediction models on NOAA’s High Performance Supercomputing (HPC) systems. The role bridges the technical transition between research and development of NCEP’s computing algorithms and their operational implementation, ensuring efficient data flow to internal and external customers and communicating product changes.

US citizenship and the ability to obtain a Public Trust security clearance are mandatory. The candidate must have lived in the U.S. for the last 3 years. The position is remote, with work hours aligned to the Eastern time zone (customer site: College Park, MD).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an Analyst supporting the HPC operational suite of weather prediction models, acting as an expert technical authority for continuous, critical operations of NWS supercomputing systems (24/7/365).
  • Migrate existing models from on-premise HPC clusters to a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) HPC environment.
  • Independently analyze, evaluate, and implement modifications in a time-critical, complex operational suite.
  • Support applications across scripting languages such as Python, C++, FORTRAN, and Bash, including compiling, testing, debugging, and documenting.
  • Perform upgrades to the HPC operational suite using established software development standards.
  • Ensure numerical model implementations and upgrades are properly tested and coordinated.
  • Troubleshoot complex application issues during business hours and on a rotating on-call basis during off-hours.
  • Suggest technically feasible solutions and recommend efficient automation approaches with positive impact on multiple users.
  • Communicate effectively with software developers to implement changes.

Requirements

  • B.S. or equivalent experience in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, computer science, mathematics, or a related physical science, with five or more years of experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
    • Work in an HPC environment on the Linux platform with large-scale parallel file-systems (petabytes of storage), parallel processing (MPI/OpenMP), and workload managers.
    • Experience with scientific applications in cloud HPC environments (e.g., GCP) is desired.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Python, C++, FORTRAN, and Bash scripting.
  • Knowledge of NCEP data formats (GRIB2, NETCDF, BUFR) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with weather display software systems used within the NWS (e.g., AWIPS2).
  • Knowledge of the NCO model production suite is desired.
