Science Tutor (North Campus)

About the role

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is seeking chemistry tutors to work with students one-on-one or in small groups in support of foundational and general chemistry courses. Professional tutors must be knowledgeable in their field and have a strong academic background in their subject area. Peer tutors must have taken advanced courses in their field, earning no lower than a B, and have an overall GPA of at least 3.0.

Responsibilities

• Review material with students by discussing text, working solutions to problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments and provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
• Provide supplemental instruction to individual or small groups of students to improve academic performance, improve occupational skills, or prepare for academic or occupational tests.
• Organize tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
• Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices or to learn new techniques.
• Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Requirements

• Professional Tutor: degree or success in advanced courses in the subject area
• Peer Tutor: High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two recommendations of an instructor

• Knowledge of the specific subject matter
• Knowledge of various tutoring methods
• Knowledge of computers and related software applications
• Ability to organize the tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning
• Ability to provide feedback to students to encourage, motivate and build confidence
• Ability to identify, develop or implement individual education plans for students
• Ability to communicate clearly and successfully apply strong interpersonal skills to interactions with students, coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc.

Schedule

Work hours will vary but will generally fall between the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Friday. Summer hours are 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Friday.

Pay

Pay rate is determined by education level, ranging from $15.00 to $20.00 per hour.
