Science Teacher - Special Education Certification Preferred
About the Role
Under the direction of the Building Principal, the Science Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students, ensuring an atmosphere conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of all individuals. This role involves supervising students in various school-related settings, monitoring and evaluating student outcomes, and interacting with students, parents, staff, and the community.
Responsibilities
- Provides a safe and encouraging learning environment tailored to the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
- Plans and develops instructional plans, lessons, experiments, and support activities aligned with approved district curriculum and goals.
- Maintains accurate records, tests, and reports as required by the Delaware Department of Education (DDOE), federal regulations, and School Board Policy to demonstrate student performance.
- Analyzes and uses student performance data to inform instruction.
- Establishes and maintains rapport and communication with students, school personnel, and parents.
- Implements effective classroom routines, procedures, and management strategies.
- Upholds School Board and school-based policies and procedures.
- Collaborates with guidance, special education personnel, and outside resources to support students with special needs.
- Integrates technology to enhance student learning and instructional delivery.
- Stays current with evidence-based teaching practices through professional development.
- Participates in district and school-level committees to foster improvement and growth.
- Communicates curriculum and student-related information effectively in oral and written form.
- Attends and participates in meetings (e.g., IEP, conferences).
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or Supervisor.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
- Hold or be eligible for a State of Delaware teacher certification in Science.
- Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodologies.
- Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Proficiency in using multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent human relations skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Special Education certification is preferred.

Training
Appoquinimink School District may require training in Safety-Care or a similar competency-based crisis prevention intervention program as a condition of continued employment.

Failure to meet or maintain licensing or certification requirements may result in withdrawal of the job offer or termination. Physical Requirements
- Regularly communicates ideas and instructions clearly and accurately.
- Possesses normal cognitive abilities, including learning, recalling, and applying practices and policies.
- Frequently sits or remains stationary for extended periods.
- Exerts up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
The work environment is primarily within a school setting, requiring the ability to move around the school and classroom.
Pre-Employment Requirements
- Criminal background check and tuberculosis test.
- Provide proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S., completion of I-9 form, and paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
