Science Policy Associate UNPAID Internship

Carboncopies Foundation is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the science and technology of whole brain emulation—the process of transferring the structure and functions of a brain from its original substrate to another computational substrate of a neural prosthesis. Founded by neuroscientists and technologists, we serve as a nexus for research collaboration, education, and public discourse on the path toward preserving and extending human cognition. Our work spans multiple disciplines including neuroscience, computer science, nanotechnology, and philosophy. Through workshops, webinars, publications, and community building, we bring together researchers, students, and enthusiasts who share our vision of developing technologies that may one day allow for the precise mapping and functional recreation of neural architectures.

About the role

The purpose of this remote, unpaid internship is to assist in developing and presenting a proposal for a large-scale, globally coordinated effort to create and implement a Whole Brain Emulation (WBE) roadmap.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing a federal research and policy proposal outlining opportunities for increased U.S. investment in WBE and its enabling technologies.
• Research relevant federal agencies, programs, and funding opportunities, including those within NIH, the BRAIN Initiative, NSF, and other science and technology programs.
• Identify appropriate contacts within federal agencies, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), Congressional offices and committees, and other relevant organizations.
• Help develop and maintain a database of policymakers, researchers, institutions, and other potential stakeholders.
• Assist with outreach to government officials, researchers, universities, scientific organizations, and potential partners.
• Research international developments and investment in WBE and related neurotechnology fields and their implications for U.S. scientific leadership.
• Draft and edit executive summaries, policy briefs, presentations, correspondence, and other materials used to communicate the proposal.
• Help identify researchers and organizations that could provide technical input, endorsements, or participate in a broader coalition supporting WBE research.
• Track relevant federal policy developments, research initiatives, and funding opportunities.

Qualifications

The following qualifications and/or experience aren't required but would be helpful for this role:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Self-motivated with ability to work independently
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Interest in neuroscience, brain-computer interfaces, or consciousness studies (preferred)

Schedule

• 1 hour weekly organization meeting
• 1 hour daily co-working sessions
• Approximately 10 - 20 hours / week
• At least 6 months commitment
