Science Laboratory Manager and Chemical Hygiene Officer
About the role
Albion College invites applications for a Science Laboratory Manager and Chemical Hygiene Officer. This position provides support for teaching and research activities in the Chemistry & Biochemistry and Physics Departments by serving a dual role in managing laboratory operations while directing campus-wide chemical safety and compliance. Reporting jointly to the Department Chairs of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Physics, this position oversees the day-to-day setup, inventory, and instrumentation maintenance for undergraduate teaching and research laboratories. As the designated campus Chemical Hygiene Officer, this person maintains the college's Chemical Hygiene Plan and advises campus officials on the college Safety Plan as needed, oversees hazardous waste collection and disposal, conducts regular safety checks, and provides safety training to faculty, staff, and students. The person in this role also directly supervises student laboratory assistants.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry or chemical physics, or experience working in a chemical lab
- Minimum of two (2) years' experience in a laboratory setting
- Experience in the handling and disposal of hazardous materials
Skills and attributes
- Solid background in chemistry and hands-on experience with scientific instrumentation in both chemistry and physics, with an emphasis on equipment troubleshooting and repair work
- Comfortable in a lab environment with a willingness to learn
- Experience working with machinery and setting up equipment is preferred
- Independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload with sensitivity and confidentiality
- Must contribute to a campus climate that emphasizes a commitment to working with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures and backgrounds
