About the role

Albion College invites applications for a Science Laboratory Manager and Chemical Hygiene Officer. This position provides support for the teaching and research activities in the Chemistry & Biochemistry and Physics Departments by serving a dual role in managing laboratory operations while directing campus-wide chemical safety and compliance.

Reporting jointly to the Department Chairs of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Physics, this role oversees the day-to-day setup, inventory, and instrumentation maintenance for undergraduate teaching and research laboratories. As the designated campus Chemical Hygiene Officer, this person maintains the college's Chemical Hygiene Plan, advises campus officials on the college Safety Plan, oversees hazardous waste collection and disposal, conducts regular safety checks, and provides safety training to faculty, staff, and students. The person in this role also directly supervises student laboratory assistants.

Responsibilities

  • Manage laboratory operations for the Chemistry & Biochemistry and Physics Departments, including setup, inventory, and instrumentation maintenance for undergraduate teaching and research laboratories.
  • Serve as the campus Chemical Hygiene Officer, maintaining the college's Chemical Hygiene Plan and advising on the Safety Plan.
  • Oversee hazardous waste collection and disposal.
  • Conduct regular safety checks and provide safety training to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Supervise student laboratory assistants.
  • Troubleshoot and repair scientific instrumentation in both chemistry and physics.
  • Plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload with sensitivity and confidentiality.
  • Contribute to a campus climate that emphasizes a commitment to working with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical physics, or experience working in a chemical lab.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience in the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Solid background in chemistry and hands-on experience with scientific instrumentation.
  • Comfortable in a lab environment with a willingness to learn.
  • Experience working with machinery and setting up equipment is preferred.
  • Independent judgment to manage workload effectively.

Schedule

Full-time, 12 months per year.
