Position Information
Job Summary: Coordinate daily operations of college biology and chemistry laboratory facilities in support of undergraduate science education.
Responsibilities
- Maintain clean, orderly, safe laboratories and storeroom; provide appropriate receptacles in laboratories for waste materials, chemicals and broken glass.
- Assemble, prepare equipment/supplies and organize/set out materials for all assigned labs; organize and maintain a laboratory experiment list for the semester (as supplied by individual faculty).
- Monitor completion of scheduled lab exercises by all sections; ensure that lab materials continue to be available for classes that unavoidably deviate from the standard lab schedule (e.g., due to class cancellation, holidays, etc.).
- Maintain current SDS database for laboratories, prep rooms, and storage areas; maintain usage logs and inventory of chemicals and supplies/equipment.
- Order all chemicals, supplies, and other consumables for laboratories.
- Serve as department Chemical Hygiene Officer. Treat chemical waste for appropriate disposal according to the college’s chemical waste policies; autoclave and dispose of biological waste according to recommend biohazard waste disposal policies.
- Keep maintenance and test logs and perform/coordinate routine maintenance for lab equipment and send out equipment for routine maintenance and calibration.
- Act as an instructional/technical resource for adjunct faculty or students with respect to the lab experiment reagents/equipment and associated safety concerns.
- Prepare check-in and checkout documentation and equipment for the start and end of the semester. Conduct periodic inspection of student lab drawers.
- Clean and maintain field equipment (waders, nets, kits, etc.). Maintain regular communication with Biology and Chemistry faculty to ensure effective collaboration and support.
- Supervise open lab times for students to complete lab activities, as schedule permits.
- Absorb and assist faculty as available in developing experimental procedures or in constructions of specialty lab equipment.
- Support academic laboratory safety program, train faculty as appropriate, and monitor compliance, including usage of safety goggles in the laboratory.
- Participate in ongoing profession development in laboratory safety/chemical hygiene.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field, or a combination of relevant experience, education and training that equates to the required degree.
- Hazardous materials training.

- Proficient in software systems, such as Microsoft Office Suite and basic office equipment; comfortable learning new technologies as needed.
- Work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate a strong sense of initiative.
