SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
Every Thursday lunchtime, St John’s Catholic Primary School comes alive with the enthusiasm of around 20 young Eco Club members, ranging from Year 1 to Year 6. United by curiosity and a love for nature, the children embrace every opportunity to get their hands dirty—whether hunting for bugs or planting daffodil and tulip bulbs in hopes of brightening the school grounds in spring (if the squirrels don’t get to them first!).
Creative Activities for Kids
The club sparks creativity through hands-on projects. In September, children made lavender bags, and in November, they experimented with essential oils and bicarbonate of soda after running out of homegrown lavender—a clever idea borrowed from eco-enthusiast Nancy Birtwhistle. All materials are sourced from home or WRAP, emphasizing resourcefulness and imagination. Some of the children’s handiwork will be displayed at the St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival, showcasing their creativity and love for the environment alongside other local community groups.
Duke of Edinburgh Volunteering
Elise Mosely, working toward her Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Bronze), has joined as a volunteer alongside her mum, Anne. Their contributions include decorating the tree for the St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival, participating in the November Market, and gardening on a rainy Sunday morning. Elise also compiled a list of sustainable Christmas tips, available in the latest newsletter, to inspire eco-friendly festive habits.
