About the role
The School Transportation Student Intern is responsible for assisting the Department of Transportation with a wide range of analytical and operational tasks, with a primary focus on bus route optimization and efficiency planning. The intern will support projects directed by the Director of Transportation.
Responsibilities
- Assist the transportation team in analyzing current school bus routes to identify inefficiencies, redundancies, and opportunities for optimization.
- Utilize GIS and specialized transportation routing software to map, simulate, and adjust routes for the upcoming school year.
- Input and audit student enrollment data and address updates to ensure accurate bus stop assignments.
- Review and report on key transportation metrics, such as ride times, fuel efficiency, and bus capacity utilization.
- Support the Department of Transportation with day-to-day summer preparation logistics and clerical duties.
- Prepare, review, proofread, and edit written communications (e.g., business letters, memoranda, route adjustment notifications) to ensure clarity and accuracy.
Requirements
- Demonstrate a strong interest in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Urban/Transportation Planning, Data Analytics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or a related field.
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in a related field, with a Master's degree preferred.
- Practical, hands-on experience or coursework involving data entry, spreadsheet management, mapping tools, or logistics planning is preferred.
- Ability to operate and/or acquire skills to operate a computer and related software, including but not limited to the Google Suite.

- Organizational Management: Work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage several projects simultaneously while maintaining strong organizational skills to balance the demands of a multi-tasking position.
- Compliance & Confidentiality: Perform duties with awareness of district requirements, state and federal laws, and Framingham Public Schools policies. Maintain strict confidentiality of proprietary and sensitive student/employee records in accordance with FERPA/603 CMR 28.00.
