About the Role
Provides professional social work services to students, parents, and school staff, including counseling, educational interventions, community resource information and referral, data collection and analysis, crisis intervention, threat assessment, attendance support, consultations, and program development. This role involves complex work performed within specific objectives and policies, with the employee planning their own work and exercising professional judgment based on general guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Serves as a liaison between home and school, providing feedback to all parties concerning attendance and academic performance to enable parents to participate in their child’s education.
- Identifies and collaborates with outside community resources, including the Department of Social Services, Juvenile Probation, Juvenile and Domestic Court, and the Mental Health Center.
- Collects and analyzes sociological data for exceptional education, including home information, developmental and health history, school history, family living conditions, and family dynamics.
- Consults with parents, teachers, students, administrators, and staff to determine the most appropriate educational environment and services for students.
- Assists in screening students for exceptional education and prepares sociological reports concerning eligibility for services.
- Provides outreach and in-home intervention services for families and students.
- Handles crisis situations, including illness, death, abuse, and student threats of violence.
- Develops, coordinates, and monitors service programs for students and staff; provides training for staff, parents, and students.
- Provides individual and group counseling for students.
- Implements attendance policies and laws; collaborates with staff involved in student attendance.
- Researches and coordinates community resources to address the needs of students and families.
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
- Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and adjusts instruction to meet group and individual needs.
- Uses the district’s curriculum to plan daily instructional activities.
- Prepares sociological assessments and reports as part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Supervises School Social Work Interns as appropriate.
- Makes independent decisions related to attendance procedures, residency, homelessness, and social work services, with oversight from the Supervisor of School Social Work Services.
Requirements
- An earned Master of Social Work degree from an accredited school of social work.
- Eligibility for Virginia Postgraduate Professional licensure as a school social worker.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Successful completion of background investigations/tests, including:
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation
- State Police Criminal History Investigation
- Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
- Tuberculosis Screening/Test
Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of school social work and human services delivery and administration.
- Considerable knowledge of human development and family dynamics.
- Considerable knowledge of intervention techniques, learning theory, and school organization.
- Considerable knowledge of measurement, research, and statistics.
- Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to pupil services programs.
- Demonstrated ability in individual, group, and crisis counseling.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, and interpersonal relationships.
Skills
- Uses office computers for reports, data collection, and correspondence.
- Operates media equipment for presentations.
- Frequent collaboration with principals, assistant principals, special education administrators, student services personnel, teachers, staff, parents, and public agency representatives.

$77,146.06 - $135,056.27 per year.
