General Purpose
Under the direction of the building administrator with technical guidance from the Safety & Security Specialist, the School Security Officer is responsible for routine security and protective service work in maintaining safety and security of county school buildings and grounds.
Main Job Tasks And Responsibilities
- Aid in creating a safe and conducive learning environment.
- Patrol parking lots, halls, cafeteria, restrooms, remote areas and school grounds to ensure safety and security of staff, students, and visitors, including checking students leaving school, parking permits, and improper parking, and preventing admittance of unauthorized persons to the premises.
- Direct and control traffic on/off Stafford County Public School property.
- Check all windows, doors and entrances to buildings to ensure they are secure and check for possible fire code violations.
- Investigate and report unusual conditions or disturbances to school officials in accordance with procedures established by the school principal and report any discipline infractions, unauthorized visitors, and acts of vandalism to the school administrator.
- Absenteeism and punctuality records maintained.
- Respond and attend all crisis training drills.
- Support and demonstrate core values of Stafford Schools.
- Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to position.
- Respond to written and oral requests for information promptly and thoroughly.
- Maintain a clean, neat appearance, appropriate to position and adhere to the SSO school dress code.
- Conduct surveys to assure fire protection equipment, OSHA, NFPA, BOCA codes are in compliance with local and state laws/regulations.
- Perform other related duties as required/assigned.
Education And Experience
- High school diploma, G.E.D., or any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
- Valid Virginia driver's license and satisfactory DMV background check.
- SSO certification through VA DCJS or obtain certification within 60 days of hire. (SCPS offers and pays for the course.)
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge:
- Practical safety and security knowledge and experience in loss prevention and risk management.
- Basic first aid “first responder” training.
- Skills:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google applications.
- Operate a CCTV multiplexed or digital system effectively.
- Abilities:
- Anticipate and identify activities or situations that may/have become a problem and to respond accordingly to emergencies requiring immediate action.
- Think and act quickly, effectively and responsibly under adverse circumstances.
- Effectively control or restrain an individual to protect personnel and/or property.
- Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals.
- Organize and perform work independently.
- Meet deadlines for all work even when working on multiple projects.
- Show sustained effort and enthusiasm in quality and quantity of work.
Working Conditions And Physical Requirements
- Work environment is mixed indoor and outdoor environment, with moderate noise, temperatures that are subject to extreme heat or cold, and some exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements where personal protective equipment is provided.
- The work is moderate work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
