Duties

  • Carries a firearm and live ammunition while on duty, under the conditions the employee meets all training requirements and other qualifications set forth in the Illinois Police Training Act, 50 ILCS 705, and the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board policies and procedures pertaining to Illinois police officers.
  • Complies with all Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board policies and procedures related to the use of deadly force.
  • Communicates effectively with administration, staff, and students.
  • Oversees and participates in security inspections of school facilities.
  • Makes recommendations to correct security issues once identified.
  • Actively responds to incidents, fights, or other issues in the school that threaten the safety of students, staff, and/or guests.
  • Collaborates with schools to set priorities and provide in-service for staff in regards to safety.
  • Participates in providing security for all occupants in assigned school buildings and grounds.
  • Demonstrates initiative and proactive orientation to recognizing and resolving issues, concerns, or problems.
  • Prevents unauthorized visitors from entering school buildings and/or loitering on school grounds.
  • Informs counselors, parents, teachers, and school administrators of student behavior problems.
  • Maintains liaison with police, fire and, other municipal departments to ensure maximum use of their services in order to provide adequate security and safety.
  • Exercises dignity and respect when interacting with students at all times while building positive proactive relationships.
  • Maintains monitoring of the student entry and dismissal process, gathering and lunch areas, and hallways.
  • Completes required reports and maintain records.
  • Responds immediately to emergency situations.
  • Develops and teaches a safety program for students including but not limited to drugs/alcohol, life choices, and safety in public.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of basic methods of providing site security and safety.
  • Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with adolescents in maintaining a positive and safe school culture.
  • Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.
  • Strong oral communication skills, human relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils.
  • Must be employed by a law enforcement agency in a part-time status and maintain active certification as a law enforcement officer with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and must possess a badge and identification card reflecting his/her status as a licensed law enforcement officer.
  • Must meet and maintain all training requirements and such other qualifications set forth in the Illinois Police Training Act, 50 ILCS 705, in order to carry a concealed firearm and live ammunition while performing School Security Officer Duties.
