About the role

School Safety Security Officers assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of Students, Team Members, visitors, and HMH property. Responsibilities include patrols, access control, surveillance, dispatching, supervision of students, assistance with crisis interventions (including hands-on), conflict resolution, and behavior management. Officers complete OneLink and incident reports as directed and remain sensitive to delivering quality guest services and assistance to all persons present at the facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provides information and assistance in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Multitasks and manages time accordingly.
  • Completes radio checks, provides, and facilitates all questions or concerns according to the Senior Officer or Manager on duty.
  • Handles computer programs hosted in the dispatch center, including but not limited to Student/Team Member ID badges, camera system, fire system, and electronic parking management system.
  • Provides continuous coverage of the school, controlling access and assisting students, team members, and visitors as necessary.
  • Challenges unauthorized persons in a professional and courteous manner, issues passes as appropriate, and enforces policies and procedures of the school/campus.
  • Obtains information pertaining to incidents and generates an incident report/OneLink.
  • Responds to calls and codes, including fire alarms and drills.
  • Conducts continuous patrols of the school and campus to observe and take corrective action regarding violations and detrimental conditions related to security and safety.
  • Controls visitor, student, and team member access; checks visitor passes and identification.
  • Expedites and ensures safe flow of traffic through all parking lots.
  • Provides escorts to students and team members’ vehicles as requested within jurisdiction.
  • Reports for duty in a clean and complete issued uniform, including photo identification badge.
  • Completes and submits a daily activity log at the end of the tour of duty.
  • Maintains all departmental security equipment in good operating condition and reports all damage immediately to supervisor/school Security Leader.
  • Keeps school leaders and Senior Officer informed of all matters pertinent to safety and security conditions.
  • Assists with students as directed by school leadership, including arrival, departure, lunch, instructional periods, extracurricular activities, events, and field trips.
  • Escorts students as instructed by school leadership.
  • Assists school staff with implementing crisis management plans, evaluating behavioral intervention plans, reporting behavioral observations, and reviewing pertinent behavioral and academic data.
  • Gathers and maintains data pertinent to student behavior, including ratings, documentation of critical incidents, attendance, and property damage.
  • Knowledgeable and abides by all School and campus Code of Conduct regulations and departmental procedures and policies, including parking regulations.
  • Completes all in-service training, lectures, and programs as assigned.
  • Attends all mandatory meetings (departmental or special) and staff meetings as scheduled, including safety huddles.
  • Maintains positive and appropriate relationships with students per policy and code of conduct.
  • Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for a long period of time, minimum of 8 hours a day.
  • Lifts a minimum of 100 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 100 lbs.
  • Handles disorderly and/or abusive persons.
  • Works in all weather conditions and performs duties in all areas of the school/campus, including parking lots, grounds, and outer buildings as requested.
  • Performs emergency duties when necessary.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for 8-12 hours a day.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull a minimum of 100 lbs.
  • Ability to ascend/descend 2-10 flights of stairs.
  • Ability to handle disorderly and/or abusive patients and visitors, including behavioral patients and those brought into the Emergency Trauma Department under arrest.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Full-scale State, County, Federal, and License Check conducted every other year.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of college credits (preferred).
  • Previous experience as a Security Officer or Law Enforcement experience (preferred).
  • Previous dispatching experience (desired).

Pay

Minimum rate of $20.64 hourly. The posted rate of pay is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting. The base compensation determined at the time of the offer may differ based on factors including labor market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, budget, and grant funding.
