About the Role
The Safety & Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe, structured, and orderly school environment through active supervision, consistent enforcement of school expectations, and positive student interactions. This role requires a proactive approach. Staff are expected to take initiative, remain actively engaged, and help prevent issues before they arise. This position reports directly to the Director of Culture & Climate & Principal.
Core Expectations
- Maintain active supervision at all times by continuously monitoring assigned areas
- Respond promptly to all radio calls for support and safety concerns
- Ensure students are supervised and in appropriate locations at all times
- Demonstrate professionalism and uphold school expectations consistently
- Exercise initiative and sound judgment without requiring direction
Supervision & Safety Responsibilities
- Actively monitor hallways, stairwells, bathrooms, and common areas throughout the school day
- Ensure students are in class or moving with purpose during transitions
- Monitor restrooms in alignment with school expectations, including limiting occupancy and preventing misuse
- Provide active supervision of the cafeteria, ensuring students are seated, expectations are followed, and lunch procedures are maintained, including monitoring lunch flow and maintaining accurate lunch counts
- Promptly respond to radio calls and take immediate action to address any situations that threaten the safety of students, staff, or visitors; report concerns to the Director of Climate & Culture
- When assigned to the front door, ensure all visitors follow visitor protocol
- Maintain hallways and common areas that are free of clutter to ensure safe and unobstructed movement throughout the building
- Assist with the posting and maintenance of school signage to support clear communication and organization within the building
Arrival & Dismissal
- Perform morning entry procedures, including bag checks and metal detector screening in accordance with school protocols, ensuring efficient, safe, and orderly entry of students, and maintaining continuous supervision during arrival, including coverage of both entry procedures and common areas such as the lunchroom
- Ensure consistent supervision of all areas during arrival procedures
- Supervise dismissal to ensure safe, orderly exit of students, appropriate student behavior during dismissal, and monitoring of school exits and surrounding areas as assigned
Student Management & Accountability
- Enforce the Student Code of Conduct consistently and fairly while documenting instances of student noncompliance
- Conduct locker searches as directed by administration
- Ensure no students are unsupervised at any time
Uniforms & Materials Management
- Conduct daily uniform checks and address non-compliance
- Distribute and collect loaner uniforms and maintain accurate records
- Assist with the organization and distribution of lockers and technology
Culture & Student Interaction
- Build positive and professional relationships with students
- Maintain a calm, respectful demeanor and de-escalate situations without engaging in conflict or raising voice
- Support PBIS and restorative practices to promote a positive school culture
- Exemplify professionalism, dignity, and respect when interacting with students at all times
Operations & Support
- Document incidents in the behavior tracking system
- Communicate concerns, patterns, or breakdowns in procedures to the Director of Climate & Culture
- Assist with recruitment efforts, including community outreach and maintaining a welcoming environment for visitors
- Assist with phone collection and distribution as needed, ensuring procedures are followed and items are accounted for
Professional Expectations
This position requires constant movement, visibility, and engagement. Staff are expected to remain actively engaged in supervision duties and maintain focus on assigned duties and avoid distractions that interfere with supervision responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Eligibility to work in the United States on a full-time basis (Required)
- Experience working in a high school or youth-focused setting (Preferred)
Pay
$40,000 - $55,000
