About the Role

San Diego State University’s School of Music and Dance is accepting applications for its part-time lecturer pool. Temporary faculty appointments may be full- or part-time and are often made on short notice just prior to the start of an academic term. The Fall term runs mid-August to late-December; the Spring term runs mid-January to mid-May. Summer-session opportunities may also be available. Initial appointments are typically one semester or one academic year, renewable based on satisfactory evaluations and continued availability of work.

Applications remain active in the pool for the academic year in which they are submitted.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in music or dance and/or commensurate professional experience (terminal degree preferred)
  • University teaching experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated currency in subject matter
  • Professional activity in the field

Audio Lecturer Specific Requirements

  • Extensive professional experience in audio engineering, live sound reinforcement, and music production
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software and hardware (e.g., ProTools, Ableton Live)
  • Strong understanding of acoustics, signal flow, digital signal processing, and audio equipment operation
  • Familiarity with emerging trends such as immersive audio, virtual reality, and interactive audio
  • Ability to design and deliver curricula covering sound recording, mixing, mastering, and live sound techniques
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to students of varying expertise
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students and foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment that values diversity and creative expression

Pay

Initial rank and salary are based on professional experience and educational background. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges are:

  • Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677
  • Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224
  • Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523
  • Lecturer D: $8,593 – $15,211
