Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Acts independently; consistently exercises discretion and judgment in performing work which is predominantly intellectual and varied in nature.
- Establishes and maintains rapport with students, parents, school administrators and staff, and other contacts outside of the organization.
- Promotes and protects the optimal health of students.
- Identifies health problems through observation, interviews and analysis of records.
- Covers screening services and facilitates access to immunizations.
- Evaluates the urgency and complexity of the need for action or referral.
- Provides health assessments: Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, etc. Identifies deviant health findings.
- Participates in the formulation of policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases within the school.
- Provides emergency care for illness and injury occurring while student is under school jurisdiction.
- Plans for supplies and equipment.
- Edits staff in first aid procedures.
- Edits staff in administration of medications.
- Observes the school environment and reports health and safety hazards to the school principal.
- Consults with parents regarding health of their children.
- Guides families in self-help in recognition and solution of health problems.
- Promotes communication with physicians, dentists, and community resources to plan for well being of the student.
- Provides health education.
- Provides direct health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and life styles that effect health.
- Serves as resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction.
- Provides in-service education to the school staff to promote and maintain student health.
- Acts as resource for accessing community agencies for coordination of services.
- Collects data that will allow for evaluation of school health services and analysis of outcome measures.
- Conducts research to determine cost-effective alternatives for healthcare programs.
- Develops, implements, and participates in a Quality Improvement Program for continual program effectiveness.
- Mets with other school professionals to identify problems and propose solutions relative to student health issues.
- Participates in public relations activities of the school and inter-agency activities of the community.
- Adheres to Bay City Public School and Medical Center Policies.
- Reports all illnesses and injuries to manager.
- Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards, as evidenced by observation, documentation, and peer feedback.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Valid Michigan Registered Nurse License
- Current CPR issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross Certification
- Experience preferred in areas of Public Health and child/pediatric care, including but not limited to preventive needs, childhood diseases, and psychosocial aspects of growth and development
- Agrees to maintain confidentiality of all student records/information, including, health records, scholastic, counseling, and other administrative records
- Completion of fingerprinting through CHRISS

- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
