School Nurse - Bilingual SY2026-27 (NBOE)
The Newark Board of Education Human Resource Services is seeking a School Nurse - Bilingual. This position is pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval.
About the Role
The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of School Nurse within the Office of Health Services. The School Nurse is responsible for developing comprehensive health records, performing routine screenings, providing emergency medical care, counseling, and participating in health education programs.
Responsibilities
- Develops a comprehensive health record on each new student that registers for school, including an appropriate health history.
- Performs routine screenings of vision and hearing, weighing and measuring, and blood pressure and visual dental check.
- Refers students and parents to appropriate practitioners or agencies for follow-up based on deviations from the norm.
- Interprets physical examination findings to parents, teachers, and students to motivate them to take an interest in their health.
- Assists parents in contacting professional resources for diagnosis and treatment of physical defects.
- Provides emergency medical care for all employees and arranges for care and follow-up at an appropriate emergency room or facility.
- Counsels parents, teachers, and students on medical and health-related information.
- Instructs teachers and other staff on the signs and symptoms of diseases affecting individual students.
- Reviews medical records annually to inform parents and administration about the immunization status of all school students.
- Participates in health education programs and provides health resources for students and their parents.
- Communicates with the Child Study Team to assist in placing and achieving academic success for students.
- Convenes with representatives of community agencies to address family and community health issues.
- Dispenses medication prescribed by physicians according to current guidelines.
- Serves on various committees within the school as needed.
- Administers prescribed treatments and ensures their implementation.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- An appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate or eligible for an Emergency license as deemed necessary by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing.
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, unless otherwise specified by the New Jersey Department of Education.
- A current New Jersey registered professional nurse license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing.
- Minimum of five (5) years successful experience as a registered nurse.
- Bilingual ability in English and one additional language (Spanish, Portuguese, or French Creole).
Qualifications
- Preferred: Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak English. Additional languages (Spanish, Portuguese, or French Creole) are a plus.
Benefits
The Newark Board of Education offers a competitive salary range of $70,000 - $114,750 (plus a $3,000 stipend), ten (10) month employment period, and comprehensive benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, wellness, and voluntary benefit programs. Employees also receive paid personal and sick days, vacation days, and other benefits.
