About the role
The School Health Assistant position at Jubilee Academies serves to promote the physical and mental health of students through various health-related tasks. This role is under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse and involves direct care, health advocacy, and coordination of health services.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.
- Serve as health advocate for students, notifying parents of accidents or illnesses and securing medical care when necessary.
- Coordinate medication administration to students according to district policy and procedures.
- Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs, making referrals as necessary.
- Conduct annual vision, hearing, acanthosis, and spinal screenings.
- Coordinate with the District/Regional RN for certification in vision, hearing, acanthosis, and spinal cord screenings, attending certification courses at the Regional Training Center.
- Enter data obtained from screenings into TxEIS, documenting health services provided to students in the health portal.
- Participate in the development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
- Educate faculty and staff on health-related topics as needed.
- Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.
- Review and evaluate immunization records, compiling, maintaining, and filing all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and updated health records on all students.
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
- Report potential health and safety hazards to the principal.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rules, State Board of Education rules, and board policies in the health services area.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Current CPR and AED course completion card.
- Completed Diabetes Care Assistant training, as stated in HB 598.
- Demonstrate organizational skills, communication skills, comprehensive knowledge of nursing techniques, assessing illness/injury, ethical principles, health education, wellness promotion, and inventory control.
- Knowledge of computer software, ability to implement policies and procedures, knowledge of health appraisals to identify student health defects.
- Prefer experience in school or community health settings, training as a medical assistant, or other directly related medical experience, and training to administer Basic First Aid and Medications in the school setting.
