Primary Duty
Assists in meeting the health needs of students according to district policies and within the guidelines of the GA State Board of Nursing.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Substitutes for RCSS School Nurses in schools when absent or to fill a vacancy
- Affords support to all schools in the School System as needed
- Affords assistance with the health care needs of students as they may arise
- Affords assistance with training/teaching of staff concerning medical needs of students
- Participates in 504 meetings as needed
- Affords assistance with school nurses in conducting hearing and vision screenings and other medical screenings
- Affords administration of medications and treatments to students as ordered by physicians
- Affords nursing assessments and tasks to address student health care needs
- Determines when to send a student home and notifies parent/guardian
- Maintains accurate and appropriate clinic records
- Initiates referrals to parents and school personnel
- Notifies teachers of any medical problems students may have
- Affords assistance in obtaining, filing, and delivering accident reports on students and employees to principal
- Affords assistance in gaining insight into student health
- Affords notification to principal, School Nurse Supervisor, Director of Student Services (or designee), and to the Richmond County Health Department regarding contagious diseases
- Affords screening and evaluation of findings for scoliosis, blood pressure, head lice, and reports these findings to the appropriate personnel or department (Student Services Department, East Central Health Department)
- Affords conducting vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings
- Affords identification of students with potential health problems
- Affords crisis intervention for student illness, injury, and emotional disturbance
- Affords assistance in the control of communicable diseases within the school environment
- Affords assistance in maintaining adequate clinic supplies – first aid supplies and stock medication
- Affords initiation of referrals to community health resources and serves as a liaison between home, school, and community
- Affords assistance in maintaining school agreements
- Affords maintenance and updating of medical skills through CPR certification
- Affords ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel, and informs
- Affords assistance in conducting physical examinations for special education students to participate in Special Olympics when requested
- Affords serving as a resource person to school administrators or classroom teachers in health instruction
- Affords acting as a resource person in promoting health careers
Work Environment/Physical Demands
The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, and sit. Travel may be required for this position.
