About the Role

The Custodian (Day or Night) maintains an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and the public. Responsibilities include arranging equipment and furniture for meetings and events, performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance, and minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure.

Reports to: School Principal

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Arranges furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
  • Cleans school facilities (e.g., classrooms, offices, restrooms, lunch rooms, halls, carpets, graffiti removal, windows, walls, gyms, bleachers, stage, locker rooms, sidewalks, grounds).
  • Completes employer-required training to maintain current knowledge of diocesan, state, and federal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Distributes supplies, equipment, and/or mail (e.g., fills soap dispensers, towel/toilet paper dispensers, delivers packages, furniture, TV/VCR carts).
  • Executes minor repairs (e.g., assembling furniture, changing ballast, plumbing, locks, windows, ceiling tiles, filters).
  • Informs students, staff, and visitors regarding activities, safety, and facility maintenance.
  • Inspects school facilities to ensure safe operations, identify necessary repairs, and report vandalism, equipment breakage, or weather-related damage.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops) to ensure availability.
  • Oversees students assigned to cafeteria or other duties, providing instruction, direction, and oversight.
  • Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g., opening gates, raising flags, unlocking doors, removing snow, placing crossing signs).
  • Assists in scheduling facilities and provides information to those requesting facility usage.
  • Responds to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms).
  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., locking doors, turning off lights, setting alarms).
  • Attends in-service training (e.g., blood-borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid).
  • Services job-related machinery/equipment (e.g., adjusting, cleaning, and oiling vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers; replacing brushes, pads, rollers).
  • Assists other personnel to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Works under direct supervision using standardized routines and operates within a defined budget.
  • Utilizes resources from other work units as required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Skills: Operates industrial maintenance equipment (e.g., electrical cleaning equipment, common tools) and adheres to safety practices.
  • Knowledge: Performs basic math (fractions, percents, ratios); understands written procedures, writes routine documents, and speaks clearly; comprehends complex, multi-step instructions. Familiar with industrial cleaning methods and safety practices.
  • Abilities: Schedules activities/meetings, collates data, and considers multiple factors when using equipment. Adapts to changing work priorities, communicates with diverse groups, and works as part of a team. Problem-solving involves identifying issues and selecting action plans, with moderate interpretation for data and equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Significant lifting (up to 30 lbs unassisted; occasionally up to 75 lbs).
  • Frequent carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Climbing and balancing (e.g., ladders, scaffolding) for cleaning, changing light bulbs, or replacing ceiling tiles.
  • Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
  • Significant fine finger dexterity.
  • Job requires 5% sitting, 90% walking, and 5% standing.
  • Performed under minimal temperature variations with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Qualifications

  • Job-related experience desired; less than high school/GED acceptable.
  • Valid PA Driver’s License and evidence of insurability required.
  • CPR/First Aid Certificate and Bloodborne Pathogen Training required.
