About the role

The School Custodian III position involves directing and supervising the work of subordinates in maintaining a clean and orderly environment for a school. This includes direct involvement in various maintenance tasks such as plumbing, electrical, and woodwork.

Responsibilities

• Directs work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school
• Assigns, lays out, inspects and supervises the work of subordinates to ensure buildings and grounds are kept clean and orderly
• Performs more difficult maintenance work such as plumbing and electrical fixtures, and woodwork not requiring journey worker level trade skills
• Serves as supervisor for custodial staff in preparing for special school functions
• Supervises custodial staff in the maintenance of special school equipment like swimming pools, auditoriums, and loudspeaker systems
• Maintains flowers, plants, and lawns
• Requisitions, receives, stores, and is responsible for janitorial supplies and equipment for the school assigned
• Makes reports on work accomplished and of unusual happenings or accidents
• Keeps daily time sheets
• Has security responsibility for the school
• Turns "night lights" on and off at proper hours
• May supervise student help when assigned
• May operate power equipment such as power lawn mowers
• May perform the typical duties of lower level custodians if necessary

Requirements

Applicants must have at least two (2) years of progressively responsible work experience in janitorial or related custodial work, grounds maintenance work, and/or general laboring work. At least one (1) year of this experience must be comparable to a School Custodian in the State service. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of supervisory aptitude.

Qualifications

General experience must include:

• Progressively responsible work experience in janitorial or related custodial work such as sweeping, dusting, and cleaning of buildings
• Grounds maintenance work experience including activities such as cleaning, watering, fertilizing, trimming, mowing, sweeping, and raking
• General laboring experience such as moving materials, furniture, and equipment; loading and unloading trucks; carrying, unloading, and stacking tools and supplies for skilled craftsmen; and digging trenches and ditches
